Clinical assessment and decision making

The aim of this module is to develop critically reflective practitioners who demonstrate clinical assessment and clinical decision making competence to provide safe, effective person centred care. This is delivered as a single module and offers clinical and professional development opportunities for registered healthcare professionals working in an appropriate area.

The module is key within NHS Lothian to support the development of safe and effective, person centred practitioners working across Health and Social Care. Specialists from the multi-professional team including medical, nursing and allied health care professionals will contribute to the module. This module is also a pre-requisite for the NHS Lothian/91¿´Æ¬ Advanced clinical practice modules.

Mode of delivery :  Blended. Virtual study sessions will be delivered and facilitated by the module team and clinical experts. These will utilise a range of teaching and learning experiences including lectures, problem-based tutorials, seminar groups, and group discussion.  Key to this module is student engagement in clinical work-based learning within your own clinical workplace. This provides the opportunity to enhance and consolidate your classroom learning with clinical colleagues and practice assessors.

Admission criteria

Role within primary or secondary care (adult and/or paediatric) which requires development of clinical competence in person centred clinical assessment and clinical decision making.

Applicants must be registered with a professional body (ie NMC, HCPC, GPC, etc).

Support from line manager to participate in learning activities and complete formative and summative assessments. Support from practice assessor to support clinical learning and assess clinical competencies.

Student-centred Learning Agreement will require support from line manager to agree role specific competencies.
