Choosing a specialty in the medical field is a significant decision that can shape your career trajectory and daily professional life. For podiatrists, the option to become a podiatric surgeon presents an exciting opportunity to expand their expertise and engage in more advanced medical procedures.

Podiatric surgery is the surgical management of the bones, the joints and soft tissue structures of the foot and ankle. This includes things like managing surgical correction of bunions, arthritic joints, as well as soft tissue pathologies such as Morton’s neuroma.

A practicing podiatrist might choose to become a podiatric surgeon if they want to develop their career by advancing their surgical skills and treating a more challenging caseload. Podiatric Surgery might also appeal to podiatrists interested in going into extended scope roles in muscular skeletal medicine and non-surgical orthopaedic medicine. In practice, this means engaging in more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, collaborating closely with other healthcare professionals, and potentially leading specialised clinics.

Since podiatric surgery will appeal to practicing podiatrists, it is crucial that the opportunity to specialise in this area fits around their existing commitments. The MSc Theory of Podiatry Surgery at 91¿´Æ¬ is delivered online and provides students with the flexibility to develop their career while still working. Online delivery also means that the course is accessible to more people as there is no need to relocate or commute. The part-time route allows the course to be completed over a longer period of time to suit individual needs.

Accredited by the Faculty of Surgery of the , this postgraduate course gives students the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of two institutions in podiatry.

This course will enhance a podiatrist’s practice by covering topics such as pharmacology, surgical management of the foot, clinical investigations, and orthopaedic medicine. Students will also learn research methods and complete a dissertation in a foot and ankle surgical topic as part of the overall master's programme.

Upon completion of the MSc Theory of Podiatric Surgery, career prospects are excellent. Graduates are eligible to apply for surgical training posts, which are advertised by the Royal College of Podiatry.
